CRITICAL THINKING TIP

When reading a chart or graph, think about what it may look like with different units along the axes. Is the size of the visual image appropriate for the research question and the data? Clarity should determine how you accurately communicate the findings and the shape, scale, and size of the visualizations.

Let’s alter the scale and instead use zero as the starting point to see how in this case it may result in a distorted visual message. (See figure 17.) Although a decline can still be seen across the later years, the actual range does not seem so dramatic now. Because of the large blank space below the frequency curve, it’s not the best visualization. Which graph, then, is a more accurate representation of the data?
